BACK FLOW PREVENTION AND TESTING

Backflow preventer is installed at strategic locations to prevent contamination entering the water supply pipes. The simple way in installing backflow prevention is an air gap. Air gap is an open space between device connecting to a plumbing system.

Upon installation of testable devices, they should be tested to protect the safety of the drinking water. Backflow occurs when the major water delivery supply is at lower pressure than the internal water plumbing system. Any property’s drinking water supply has a right to protection from contaminated water when the backflow incident occurs.

Contaminated water causes health problems. Because of this, the water services regulations of many countries require to install backflow devices at all property boundary. A licensed plumbing contractor can install backflow prevention devices.

Backflow risk is identified as low, medium, or high.

a) Low risk- condition or practice connected with the drinking water supply that is nuisance but does not cause health problem.

b) Medium risk- a condition connected with the drinking water supply that cause health problem.

c) High risk-a condition connected with the drinking water supply that cause death.

There are backflow prevention device that reduce water pressure and flow rate downstream of the device. If the water pressure is hazardous for the activities on your building, consult a licensed plumbing contractor before installing a backflow prevention device.
Back pressure occurs when air is blown through the straw and bubble is erupting at the submerged end. Natural gas is being pulled into a potable water supply, gas could flow to a kitchen faucet. This is a direct cross connection with toxic materials flowing into the water system.
In most local municipalities, the law requires backflow prevention device inspected or tested regularly. Air gap is the least and simple form of backflow prevention, It works to prevent drain water from the sink that could contaminate dishes.

The basic method against backflow is a mechanical backflow preventer which is the physical barrier to backflow. The major mechanisms of backflow preventers are the reduced pressure principle assembly, the pressure vacuum breaker, and the double check valve assemblies.

To ensure the proper function of a backflow prevention assembly, it should be tested in a periodic basis.
With good maintenance and periodical testing, backflow prevention can last for years that will deliver healthy water supply system.
